Sale grosso, or coarse salt, is a pantry essential—but this one is truly special. Unlike industrial salt, this Trapani sea salt is never bleached, washed, or mechanically harvested. Free from anti-caking agents, it’s shoveled by hand from the historic salt flats of Trapani, on Sicily’s northwestern coast—just as it has been for over a thousand years.
Harvested from the shallow waters of the Mediterranean, this coarse salt is naturally rich in iodine, fluorine, magnesium, and potassium, with less sodium chloride than regular table salt. That means deeper flavor with less sodium—ideal for bringing out the best in every dish.
With its large, slow-dissolving crystals, this salt is perfect for:
- Seasoning pasta water and vegetables
- Salt-crusting meats or fish
- Brining, curing, or pickling
- Desserts and chocolate
A natural, sustainable alternative to refined salt, Trapani Coarse Sea Salt brings authentic Sicilian tradition to your kitchen.
A Thousand-Year Tradition on the Sicilian Coast
On the windswept coastline of Trapani—where white salt pyramids and ancient windmills dot the landscape—the summer salt harvest is an enduring ritual dating back to the Greeks and Romans. The Gucciardo family continues this legacy using a historic salt mill built in 1884, located inside a protected nature reserve overseen by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
Here, amidst a sanctuary for migratory birds like purple herons and grey parrots, Enzo, Salvatore, and their team hand-harvest salt in the scorching heat of July and August. Their work is a labor of love, rooted in Sicilian heritage.
Unlike industrial salts—harvested by machines, then washed, stripped of minerals, and reconstituted with chemicals—Trapani sea salt is 100% natural, unrefined, and full of character.
